  胶体颗粒最内一层是氢氧化铁固体,称为胶核。胶核是氢氧化镁固体,是电中性的。胶核会吸附离子。溶液中的铁离子和氢氧根离子可与生成胶核的离子生成沉淀,最容易被吸附。但由于铁离子三价,单个离子带的电荷比氢氧根离子多,故更容易被吸附。  一般认为,胶核外层会紧密地吸附一层铁离子,这一层叫做紧密层。算到紧密层,由于铁离子带正电,颗粒带正电。但平常说的氢氧化铁胶粒带正电,是没有将扩散层全部计入,而只是计入了一部分。  胶体颗粒电泳的时候,颗粒运动时胶核运动、紧密层运动,但扩散层不是全部运动,只是靠近紧密层的一部分扩散层运动。这样,在扩散层中会有一个面。面内离子参与电泳,面外离子不参与电泳。由于氢氧根离子只是扩散层的中所有氢氧根离子的一部分,其数量并不足以中和紧密层中的铁离子带的正电荷,所以氢氧化铁胶粒带正电。
